I was disappointed with the 3rd generation ipod touch released yesterday so I'm thinking about getting one of those unlocked 3GS on eBay.

But I don't want the phone jailbroken and I want it to function just like a normal phone with all the firmware updates available as it comes out.

    Is this possible?

You need to jailbreak to unlock.

You could buy a factory unlocked iPhone from Hong Kong (or a few other countries) and do what you are wanting.

The downsides: expensive and you will get no support from Apple.

Actually you do get support/warranty when it's factory unlocked. I do agree with you on being expensive. Be prepared to spend about $900+ for a 32GB 3GS. I personally think it's not to bad considering you won't have any headaches looking for a new unlock and iPhones maintain their values extremely well so you can always sell it later on recouping most of the cost.

I had always heard that an iPhone will only get service from the country of its origin. I cannot attest to that personally but I do agree; spend the money now and have an unlocked iPhone.
