BSD Subsystem is essential to almost every app but what does it actually do? I've been pondering the question for the past few days and finally decided to ask one of yall.

BSD Subsystem allows you to interact with the OS through the command line. Ever look in /bin? You'll see a ton of commands that you may or may not use, but your apps rely on them.

BSD is mostly superficial overhead. Using Squid to set permissions instead of Mobilefinder and iphonebrowser instead of SSH will allow you to access and manipulate your files at will. BSD is not essential.

Many developers use the BSD Subsystem so they don't have to reinvent the wheel within their application - they can just make calls using the commands included in the BSD Subsystem. BSD is not essential - but it is used quite a lot and doesn't hurt anything...

It gives a much more complete and feature-rich UNIX environment to your iPod.
You'll never know when you need the tools it includes, and many applications are built off the functionality of the binaries included in BSD Subsystem.

I would install cydia instead... it includes many more features then the BSD subsystem and accomplishes the same thing.
