I have an iPhone (first generation) and the power button no longer works. I am posting in this thread because this could happen to iPod touch users as well. Anyway, I know that at some point the iPhone will freeze. At that point, I won't be able to force reboot it using the traditional method of holding down the power and home buttons. Is there any other way to force reboot the phone, even if it puts it into recovery or DFU mode?
    Thanks.

well im just putting this out there, but the other day i was at the apple store and i asked an employee if a "hard to push" power button was covered under my factory warranty. he said definitely! and that they will replace it for me.

    so im going next week.
    if anyone wanted to know.

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, the iPhone was purchased a couple of months after it was released, so the warranty is long expired.

I'm just worried because if it's frozen, I can't reboot it, the computer won't detect it, and there'll be nothing I can do. It will basically be a brick. So far I've uninstalled Winterboard and Backgrounder, which use memory and can lead to a freeze, but even so I know that a freeze is inevitable.

    ya i totally understand.
how is it broken?? like is it pushed in or just simple won't work?

cause if its pushed in you could try to force it out.

It seems to be bigger than the hole it's supposed to go through. I opened up the phone and I can't even move the button around, even after adding lubricant.

i really cannot think of anything that can get the phone into dfu or force reboot without a power button.
