Make sure you try DFU until it works:

How To Get Into DFU Mode
    1. Connect iPod to computer.
    2. Hold Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for 10 seconds.
    3. Release Sleep/Wake button and keep holding Home button for 7 seconds. Release it after 7 seconds.
    4. You are in DFU mode.

    5. If you are not in DFU mode, repeat until you are in DFU mode. It often takes many attempts before it works.

Try and hold the two buttons for as long as possible, like a minute, and see if that works. If not, try to take it into Apple.

That's fine. Just keep trying DFU mode per manram's instructions.

Edit: haha same time posting. Isn't it a common problem for the 2Gs to not boot after they try to jb them? My 1G has done that several times and it was fine after I finally got DFU mode

it doesn't need to be "on" to get into DFU mode. redsn0w is a theathered jailbreak meaning you have to be teathered to a computer to boot it manually.
