i just got an ipod touch 4g directly from amazon a week ago. the battery is really bad an i am going to return it. i am starting to think they sent me a refurbished ipod touch 4g, i mean even the packaging was crappy and the ipod was moving around. so how can i tell if it's refurbished b/c i will exchange for another ipod and i want to be able tell if my replacement if refurbed or not.

the serial number will be RM or something similar.
And there aren't even 4G refurbs yet.

Yes that's true, there is no real way to completely tell if its refurbished.

even if its refurbished, its better then the regulars, because it goes through more tests and fixes all the problems it once had.

If you purchased it off of Amazon, it's going to be new. Only apple sells the refurbs.

Well, you won't be able to tell by looking at the iPod because all Apple does is take the problematic units and throws a new housing onto them.

They also test them... EXTSIVELY. In some ways, the refurbished iPod is actually better than the new one because of this. The refurbished iPod will have less defects than a new one.

It varies. There's also a tradeoff.

    Pro:
    Cheaper
    Less likely to have issues.

    Cons:
Handled by multiple people (you won't be its first).
Usually comes in what a baseball card would rank as "Mint 9" instead of "Gem Mint 10".

Finally, Apple isn't even releasing refurbs for this gen yet. If it's defected and the battery if effed up, send it back. That simple.
