I'm sure you get tired of the same questions over and over again, so for this I apologize.

I bought a 32GB iPod Touch used, advertised as a 3G model. I would like to identify it as one or the other, and while I know the 3G is quite differently from the 2G internally, I still do not know how to identify a 2G from a 3G.

Go to Settings > General > About and check the Model Number. If it starts with MB, it's a 2G, if it starts with MC, it's a 3G.

also, i think that the 3g has only 2 lines of text on the back, and should exclude the serial number, if i remember correctly.

I would return it, if you can. You were ripped off. One day you'll be mad that you have a 2gen when you could have got a 3rd gen.

How much did you buy it for?

    Enjoy your new iPod.

It has the serial number, but it isn't in a separate line of text.

It was bought off craigslist, so returning it is probably a no go. But I only paid $160 for a 2G 32GB model in near perfect condition. I don't think that's a bad deal even though it's not a 3G.

You should return it and report that problem to craigslist.
