Can someone explain exactly what Bootneuter is? Because it seems like the most risky part of pwnage when it flashes the bootloader, and i would like to avoid it if possible. Is it required for the iPod? or is it mainly for unlocking iPhones?

Not even an option with the ipod. The only thing you can change is the regular graphis or the pwnage one.

BootNeuter is a utility the iPhone Dev's created to help unlock, change bootloader version etc.
It is only for the iPhone and won't even give you the option or in the matter of fact install it if you chose the iPod firmware in the IPSW builder.
