What's a bootloader? Does it have anything to do with a 1.1.4 iPod Touch?
The bootloader loads the firmware, and it is used with both the iPod touch and iPhone, all firmwares.
Certain programs, such as PwnageTool and WinPwn modify the bootloader to accept custom firmwares with Installer/Cydia on it, and that is why they are dangerous. If you interrupt tampering with the bootloader, it is not able to load the regular FW, the recovery OS, or the DFU OS, so it is technically "bricked".
