This is a discussion thread for the "BlackBerry PlayBook Hacked, Runs iOS Apps" story posted on the front page.
I can't decide if this is real... I feel like he could have faked the videos and his explanation as to why it works could just be a theory of his. And I'm sure he could find a way to release it if it is real by doing something like what emulators do by not releasing the bios of it. Having to go rip them yourself or downloading them from someone else. I'd be interested to see more info on this in the future.
While the developer's arguments are technically feasible (same CPU architecture, homegrown replacement APIs), I still think it's fake. • It's virtually impossible for one guy to rewrite the entire iOS SDK in less than a couple of years. Keep in mind that so many things have additionally changed since its first release in 2008. • You could say WINE does the same thing for Windows apps, but it's been around for years and is a collaborative open-source project. And it still doesn't work nearly as well as that "hack" does. • iOS apps are encrypted by default. Either the developer hacked and reimplemented the entire iTunes/FairPlay DRM system (unlikely), or the apps have been cracked (slightly less unlikely), or this damn thing doesn't actually exist (highly likely)!
If this is real and it's released, PlayBook is officially the best tablet. What other tablet can run BOTH iOS and Android apps? None.
If this is real, it would be pretty awesome. RadioShack has the 16BG Playbook for $199. Not sure if it's a little cheaper anywhere else tho. My initial thought, however, is that this is fake.... And it's not mentioned directly, but will it run ANY iOS app? Or does each app need to be tweaked to run properly? And also, I would wonder how well the apps run. Are they sluggish, buggy? Or do they run as well as they do on an iDevice???
