What is the purpose of the small black oval like shape on the back of an iPod Touch?
I assumed it was there for grip, but is it?

The wi-fi connector. Without that, you wouldn't have any wifi on your touch.

Well the antenna is behind it. If they didn't have it then the wifi signal wouldn't penetrate throught the casing.

That's why that last leaked iPod touch 4 was fake, it had a camera instead of an antenna. It would still need an antenna. So it fails.
