SSH into your idevice and go to /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook
copy that file and save it on your computer then when you want to put in back on your iphone(after you restored or something)or if you wanna have the same contacts in another idevice just copy the file back to /private/var/mobile/Library...

That's how i always do it and it always works...

I use Google Sync to sync (and therefore backup) my calendars and contacts.

You are not mistaken, but if you open it with a hexeditor or notepad you can search for numbers and they are normal numbers, not converted to other format, just the names are converted to other format

you can convery sqlite to a speadsheet, but everythings confused. If you want verbatem, copy the adress book folder from user/library to your desktop via ssh or iphonebrowser, then copy it to another idevice, if you want to change them, make a backup, edit the adressbook on the idevice then ssh it out then restore your backup

There's a free program in the app store, PhoneCopy.

Just make an account and you can sync all the time, so if you add someone:
    you sync and it's done.
Perfect for people like me who screw their iPhone and need to restore lol a lot.
