I'm going to get the Spirit jailbreak and I'm wondering what media player is the best. I'm laning towards vlc4iphone as there is a lot of codec support, but it has a lot of bugs. CAn anyone tell me thier preference and why?

Music/Videos app. Why? Because they're the default apps and they work best

Well, the whole point of this exercise is that I don't have to !@#!@$ transcode my DivX/XviD/H.264 to the lousy mp4 format

Well, then honestly, vlc4iphone really sucks. I mean, I used it because, like you, I was too lazy to convert some videos. So I tried it, and the audio was really glitchy. It would start, then stop, then start, then stop. I don't know if that's just for me, but I would never recommend that app to anyone.

if I'm not wrong H.264 plays nice on the iPod/iPhone doesn't it?

forget players on the ipod/iphone that support formats for videos other than mp4 or mov
the only apps that can handle them are mplayer and vlc4iphone both suck.
@ChrisL: no it is not jsut you - it is because that the cpu is too slow to real-time decode^^

well...at the moment there is nothing but recoding...

without converting to iPod/iPad format first, all these media players that transcode are just horrendous. As ZhiZhi said, the CPU transcoding has its downside such as laggy audio/video etc. Ive tried many, such as TVersity and Orb, but it was too much of a hassle that took away from overall enjoyment. Not too mention some of them you have to install additional software on your PC.

As for an overall media player, I found dTunes to work well.

3GS or ipod touch 3G have better cpus and more RAM so they handle vlc4iphone way better - it is not because of bad code but of available resources that vlc4iphone laggs horribly on older devices

last but not least another solution that bases on pc/mac: if your gfx card does support ATI avivo or nVidia CUDA then you can use 3rd party software like Nero Multimedia Suite 10 to transcode using your GPU - that makes the conversion from divx<>mp4 way faster (about 10-20 times)
then it would really be easier to do a simple conversion than to mess with 3rd party players on your idevice
