Get a juice pack or depending on the airline they may have an ipod connection which will keep it charged. I normally carry an iPod Touch, iPhone, and a Classic or two with me going from here to Asia or Australia.

I bought something off of woot.com a few months back. It was a Black & Decker power pack. Actually, since it was on a 2-for-Tuesday, I have a pair of them. You charge it up at home, and can take it on the road/flight with you. When your battery gets low on the ipod, or any other device like a cell phone, you can either plug into its USB port or it actually has a plug as well. Then turn the thing on, and it charges your battery or lets it run off of its power.

Mine is similar to that one. I've used to to run my laptop for a couple of hours before. It is about the size of a paperback book, and less than an inch thick. Fairly lightweight. Should slip in the bottom of any carry-on bag easily.
