What are the benefits of becoming a registered developer for Apple, other than the software betas?

You can submit and sell applications in the AppStore... More-so the main reason to do it, not just a "benefit".

the biggest reason is putting apps in the app store, but first be sure to know how to actually code an app, there is a free SDK for iphone and you dont have to register

Would you have to enroll in the standard or enterprise program to put apps on the app store?

    Standard - $99 / year.

The enterprise program is for companies wanting to distribute in-house.

I know the cost. I'm planning on developing an app, but I'm not signed up on the Standard or Enterprise programs, just as a free developer. Could I still put apps on the app store?

No. To submit apps to the App Store, you have to pay $99 for the standard program.
