Do I have a dud? I lose around 10% battery from 45 minutes of music on my iPhone 4. Nothing else is running and the screen is off.

looks like but - but make sure that you charge your phone using the wall charger - not using your pc... as it lasts much longer

What? Where did you get this from, has it been proven?

I don't think so. I just listened to 45 minutes of music to try it out, and I lost 7% of battery.

Make sure no maps or any other application that uses network is on...

iOS 4 tends to do that, so you have to be really mindful of what you are running.

450 minutes for 100% battery = 7.5 hours of music. That's a fair bit short of the 40 hours they rate it at. I do 25 minutes of video podcast + 25 minutes of audio and only drop 5%, with all radios on.

My guess is you have something running in the back that's eating battery.
