after getting the maps, weather, and notes apps, the battery life pretty much decreased to about 5.5 hours until it goes to 20% left. Is the phone apps the culprit?

I also play gpsphone every now and then. Is this also draining it?

I'm experiencing the same. I was rather shocked when I noticed my battery dropped below 20% in a relatively short period of time.

My SSH is still turned on but isn't this needed for the iPhone apps to function? Or can I turn it off after they are installed?

    Device:
    iPod touch
SSH is a way of accessing your ipod remotely,so isnt needed unless you want to access it with putty or winscp etcetc

I left SSH running while playing music all day and it didn't affect the battery at all (WiFi yes, SSH no). It shouldn't, seeing as it's using pretty much zero CPU on idle (just because the process is RUNNING doesn't mean it's touching the battery, it's just an SSH server). Running the GBA or NES emulator will eat your battery pretty quick, as would anything that is CPU intensive. If you notice your touch getting warm, it's a direct correlation to power usage, as the more power your CPU is drawing, the hotter it will get. Play a GBA rom or a video for a few minutes and you'll notice. This is why music can get 20+ hours of battery life, and video can only get 4 or 5.
