so I wait all day and power it up and it hasnt charged at all, I dont get it, any ideas what could have gone wrong, I shut it completely off when I thought it was charging would that have any effect

and itunes recognized it when I powered it up so it must have been plugged in securely

you can't, because when it is off, you plug the cable to it. it turns on. simple

You can charge the iPod no matter what even if the iPod is off, but you have to make sure if your charging via the computer it has to be on not shut down. Or you can just use a docking station (iHome), or what ever just don't try charging with the computer shut down.

You cannot charge your iPod when your computer is off.

If you don't want to keep your computer on to charge your iPod, you can purchase a wall charger for it online, or almost any iPod dock will charge it as well. However, the 2G uses a different battery than the other iPod models, so make sure whatever you buy has a "made for iPhone" sticker on it. The iPhone has the same kind of battery as the iPod touch 2G, I believe.

I plug mine in first while it is on, then I shut it off and let it recharge over night.
