I charged my ipod overnight on my ihome so I am sure that it had a full charge. I went to class in the morning and surfed the web for about 10 minutes. Then at lunch, I got on facebook for about 5 minutes. I locked it and put it back in my pocket and went to class. When I got out of class 1.5 hours later, the ipod was completely dead.

I know that there was no way that the battery was even close to being dead before class.

There is a small possibility that I left the screen on, but i have it set to autolock in one minute. So that shouldn't be the problem. (either way, it should last 1.5 hours)

I plugged it in, and in about 5 minutes it was showing 50%.

I am not really sure if this is a hardware problem or a software problem.
    (I am restoring now)
Has anyone else had any issues like this?
    Does anyone have any advice?

Hmm I've heard of the jump to 50% thing, but not of it dying that quickly. Maybe get it exchanged and see if your new one does it?

I have the same issue. It seems to be dying at around 40% sometimes for no reason. Perhaps the calibration is bad.

I have this same issue, I'm thinking it's a software issue for not showing the correct battery status.

Maybe, but it's dying way too soon for it to simply be a percentage reporting problem in my opinion.

I may take it in to be exchanged once I get my stealth guards, so I can put them on fresh.

Turn off fetch e-mail and do it manually, also turn off location services.
I had similar problems until I change some of these things. My old 3G 32GB had similar battery problems until I did this. With location services, I have everything turned off on mine except Camera, Maps, and Google. The other simply drain battery. Try those two things and i'm sure that should help.

The problem has occurred with me even when the iPod was in Airplane Mode, which leads me to believe that Wi-fi isn't the culprit here.
