So I'm thinking of backing up my 2g ipod touch right now. From what I've read on other threads, AptBackup is the only app that's good for the PC.
Even though I've been on AptBackup's site, how does it work? And what does restoring do on the touch?

Or, if you have another app that you would rather recommend, please do so!

Also, does using these apps backup media? And by backing up programs installed by Cydia, would AptBackup keep my Cydia sources as well? Thanks!

AptBackup dosent really work ON a pc. Yeah it stores it in the backup section. But ther is a program that works via ssh that I have called isafecopy and it backs up sources, cydia apps, themes, mxtube vids and more. If you want more information and if you decide to use it, just ask and I'll post info and instructions.

Alright, I'll try your method. But I'm quite a newb and don't know what ssh is. I remember reading somewhere on iptf that i should do something with it

    Okay.

Right click your iPod in iTunes and click BackUp to backup your regular Apps.
Download AptBackup from Cydia, run it, and click Backup.
Right click your iPod in iTunes and click Backup a second time.

    Restore your iPod.

Now when your iPod is done restoring, iTunes will ask you to restore from the backup. DONT!

Re-jailbreak, then download AptBackup. DONT RUN IT!

Now right click your iPod in iTunes and click Restore From Backup.
    Select Your Backup.

    Let It Restore.

After Restore, you should have all your regular apps.
Run AptBackup and click Restore... It will reinstall all Cydia Apps.

If your upgrading from 2.2.1 to 3.0 don't use Aptbackup because the creators( bigboss) said it was less likely to work on 3.0 because some cydia apps weren't yet ported to 3.0 and may cause difficulties. I'll be right back with the step by step instructions for isafecopy.
    ------------------double post merged------------------
If you didn't see when you downloaded this that this is a trial version for 30 days so you have to restore between the days.
1: install open ssh on iPod from cydia.
    2: download isafe copy
    3: unzip file
    4: run isafecopy
5: connect device via USB and click connect.
6: once connected you can choose the categories you want to make a backup of
    7: then hit backup
It will start backing up you data into a folder within the folder you unzipped.
8: once it's done check all backup folders and make sure some aren't empty if some are check only that category and hit backup( it might take awhile to do but it's better than hours of reinstalling)
9: so now if you have to backup a few times you will have afew backup folders, no big deal. You should now hit disconnect after making sure you backed up everything.
Warning: do not use the respring/reboot buttons on isafecopy.
10: unplug your device and respring or reboot manually ( I think it's optional)
11: restore to stock 2.2.1 then upgrade to 3.0
12: jailbreak and install openssh on your device
13: connect to isafecopy like in earlier steps.
14: hit restore button and I think you pick the file with your backup from side first.
If you have a few backups you wil have to do them one by one.
15: after all the backup process is done hit disconnect. Reboot manually not through isafecopy.
16: all the stuff is back on your iPod.
Hey I hope these instructions helped and all goes well.

There is a full unlimited version for five dollars.

One more thing there is a way to keep the backups after the 30 days and later ssh them back using winscp or whatever. I read about alot of people doing this: go to the backups folder where your backups are stored on your computer copy them to another file in a different place. Desktop would be safest. Then when the 30 days are over you'll still have them.
