My brother attempted to jailbreak his used ipod touch, we're not sure which gen it is and not its lost its firmware. We've tried to restore it on 2 different computers with no luck. The restore runs still the end of the progress bar (on the ipod screen) then we get an error. Any help? Im not sure how to figure out which gen it is, or to get the firmware back on it.

The error occurs because you are not in DFU mode when restoring. To get into DFU mode, first turn off the ipod, hold both home and power buttons for ten seconds or so. Then press the power button for 2 seconds, then without letting go, press and hold both buttons, home and power for 10 seconds or so, and then let go of only the power button and hold the home button for another ten seconds or so. This way, you'll put it into DFU mode and it'll stop the errors when you restore. You haven't lost you firmware, it's just been modified in a way that does not allow it to work. What program did you use to jailbreak which firmware, because if you used blackrain to jailbreak 3.0 then it probably could cause this.

    My first question is

When did you buy your iPod?
