AT&T clearly think unlocking is a game. Infuriating.

I called two weeks ago to get my iPhone 4 unlocked. They took my IMEI, said the phone was eligible and that I would have my email and unlock procedure by April 20th. So I figure, OK, that's that.

April 20th comes and goes. I call on the 21st, they say the case is still open, waiting for who knows what, and if I don't get an email in the next five days, call back and we'll resubmit the case.

I'm not waiting that long. I call back today. The representative says "well the case is closed but I don't know why... Oh, here it says the code will be available on December 31st, 2012."

Excuse me? I was told by three different representatives that this phone was eligible for unlock.

"Well, there's nothing we can really do about it, we wait for Apple to send us the codes and that's how it works."

    Ok. Resubmit the case. Now.

"Ok. The case should resolve by May 1st."

    Fine.

So I call Apple about it. The guy I talked to has clearly seen this kind of crap already. He says to me: "I'm so sorry, we get calls like this all the time. The AT&T reps don't have any idea what they're doing. It's all on their end, and frankly, they have no idea what they're doing. Apple doesn't have any part in this, it's all AT&T's responsibility to authorize the unlock." He then tells me to call AT&T again and ask for a tier 2 senior advisor, and wishes me the best. Thank you very much sir.

So now I'm on the phone trying to convince the oblivious tech support representative to let me speak to his advisor. It's almost like they don't want me to talk to him. Hmmm, imagine that.

    Idiots.

I have my own reasons and I agree with the fact that it's all ridiculous; but why do you want your phone unlocked anyway?

Because I'm with T-Mobile, and T-Mobile is where I will be staying, especially after all of this.

After about an hour of Tech Support Wars, the advisor confirmed my phone is eligible, agreed to mark my case as high priority, said that it would be completed within 24-48 hours and committed to personally call at 2pm tomorrow regardless of the situation just to assure me that it was being done.

And if they don't, hell shall break loose.

I honestly would love to switch to T-Mobile if they didn't have such sh*t coverage. Their deals are great; 2-way family plan with unlimited everything for $100? Nice. Plus calling and texting over Wi-Fi is what I'm used to with Google Voice on my AT&T iPhone, so the adaptation would be welcome.

Heck, their latest plan is unlimited call and text with 2gb high speed and unlimited standard data, 2 lines, $50.

Call 'em back and ask for a tier 2 senior advisor. Don't back down, demand that they unlock your phone now if not sooner.

Honestly, all they have to do is probably change one option in a computer that lets iTunes give the phone an unlocked IPSW. The process probably takes all of ten seconds.
