Here's the final insult to this upgrade thingie:
When you purchase the upgrade, there is a quick communication with the itunes store and then the apps instantly appear. No downloading seems to take place. The installer file for the regular 1.1.3 upgrade is over 100mb.
Conclusion: the installer file probably contains all of the apps and installs them on your ipod, they are just not enabled until you purchase the upgrade. They seem to be dormant but pre-installed, meaning if you don't purchase it they are still sitting on your flash drive taking up space. This is only inferred based on the machine's behavior at this point, but until it's jailbroken this can't be completely confirmed.

Also, anyone know how to change the dock background? The iphone one really sucks.

All it is is your iPod has plist files that do not recognize the apps, hence the reason you do not "see them."

Once you pay for it, iTunes updates the plist files with the app names included.

Pretty simple to do considering we don't have access to the complete file system of 1.1.3 yet.
