slowly finding my way with the new iTouch / PC

I have installed a PC prog called Diskaid which seems to allow me to add files to the touch outside of iTunes. I like that.

So, I use ALOT of txt (ascii) files and wonder if anyone has advice on a good ipod text reader app?

    Q: ditto for PDF files

    Q: repeat...
Is it possible to store apps on my hard disk and install from there? I downloaded some files (*.ipa) assuming they were apps but am not sure what to do with them.

    thx

assuming you got those illegally we cant discuss that here at all
Yeah you can put them into a folder somewhere and then use ifile to navigate to that file and choose as text reader/pdf reader

Many thanks for the offer - problem is I am so new with this that I haven't a clue of implications of.... well much of anything yet.
Most apps have some kind of blurb alongside their link, some with 'more...' and I am digitally literate enough to get the drift but without experience many implications are not clear.

    Like... a car analogy...
Q: Where do I get fuel?
    A: at a gas station
i am still working out the difference between diesel and petroleum

I am very digital but totally non-mac, non-ipod

Basically looking to expand my PDA potential on the iTouch. Movies, pics etc is very clear and easy - this is mainly what it is designed for.
Calendar/contacts sync with MS outlook - cool.
But how to manage other file types!!!!!!!

I know I will look back and do a super DOH - so obvious! in a week or two but, for now, doh?

PS.. this forum reaaaaly works - HUGE thanks
PPS - ifile - thanks for the lead. Searching now
PPPS - pay for apps? No probs - but don't want to pay for what I don't want.

if you want to manage other files then SSH. to ssh over wifi download openshh and one of the many clients like winscp. To do it throuhg USB(no wifi) download afc2add and one of the many clients like ifunbox. You can get both openssh and afc2add from cydia

    cheers j-phone \****/

So much seems to be pointing to jailbreaking ???
    Cydia
iFile just came up and seems good. Any standard alternatives to this??

afc2add - googling... yes, it all seems to point back to cydia (and breaking).

I may just have to bite that bullet if I want more PDA functionality.
    any comments - blackra1n v's redsn0w ?

    redsn0w installs cydia for you

by slower do you mean slower to install - ie. this is just a one-off go slow? As opposed to something on the system (background) that remains and is always slow?
If the latter - how slow?
    10% 50% ??

I incline to stable and cydia
PS - assuming installing a downloader (not even 100% clear what this means

    ) can be done later

very kind of you to follow my dribbles here :!)

I have a good looking guide from MyMod (lots of screenshots and instructions) and hope it will do the job.

    Any prefs yourself?
    I have 3G iTouch 3.1.2
