Yes, I realize this is possible through the default Settings! However after installing several wallpaper packages from Cydia, the Wallpaper selector in Settings operates very slowly and freezes very often, and I have to do a Tethered boot... clearly it wasn't designed with 300+ thumbnails in mind.

I know Customize can do this, but it doesn't work with 2.2+ firmware yet. Anything else?

You can change your background with winterboard.

But that would require SSH'ing it in, right? Or is there an option to actually select a wallpaper through Winterboard that I'm missing?

    Solved.

for some reason the Wallpaper packages in Cydia (or at least the ones I downloaded) use standard PNGs instead of the crappy uncompressed "optimized" PNGs that the iPhone/iPod can thumbnail and cache much faster. All I had to do was SSH into the Wallpaper folder, grab the images and "optimize" them (the easiest way is by running them through iTunes).
