Apple using same chip as iPad, even with lower RAM, is actually better in other ways.

The Apple A4 chip in the iPad and the iPhone 4 are very different.

In the iPhone 4 it has:

    • 800 MHz CPU
    • 512MB RAM
    • 512KB L2 cache
    • Lower clocked graphics chip
    • Lower RAM MHz clock speed
    • Lower bus speed.

    In the iPad it has:

    • 1.0 GHz CPU
    • 256MB RAM (but the RAM has higher clocked MHz I believe it is 333 MHz vs. 266MHz)
    • 640KB L2 cache
    • higher clocked graphics chip (200 MHz vs. 166 MHz)
    • Very high bus speeds, according to AnandTech

So even though you get a lower amount of RAM, you get a faster CPU, more graphics power, and a faster device overall due to the RAM and bus speed clocks.

Unless the A4 chip makes that much of a difference I think I should wait for an upgrade...

The A4 chip cant make that much of a difference right...?

    Lol yes it does.

Benchmarks hsowed that the A4 in the iPad was 30-40% faster in the iPad than on the iPhone 4.

the A4 will give you a very smooth epxperience, no lag, very smooth high end games, faster boot, no crashing, etc.

This makes up for the lower RAM, even though 256 MB is good enough. This is a bonus

Well then apple is just being dumb and I'm sticking with my 3rd gen lol.

But still the memory and GPU aren't used in GeekBench so they may still be better.

They are better, the A4 trumps the 3rd Gen units in processing power. Apple have had to balance price with power, maybe if the cameras weren't included we'd see superior RAM quantities.
