That really doesn't make sense. It wouldn't improve the computer in any way - it isn't a laptop where every square centimeter of specs matters. All they'd be doing is pointlessly removing a feature that will drive a handful of customers away, just to make a point.

Stupid. But, we really need to retire CDs and DVDs. Thay are so unintuitive with things such as the App store and iTunes and iCloud. I can see CDs and DVDs being obsolete in twenty years.

they will obviously become obsolete, but that time is not now. yes, BDs are taking over DVDs but many people still watch DVDs.

This is dumb... I was one of the first to agree to getting rid of opticals in the laptops, but only because most people have a desktop with an optical drive for those times they need one...

Also, as the above poster mentioned, desktops are big enough there is no real reward to removing the optical drive...

Listen. They're not getting rid of optical drives just yet. However much I want them to, and I think they should, they're not just yet. The inclusion of a drive in the MacBook Pro is why I went with the air. An optical drive in a laptop is like a girl with a p*nis- in the way and unnecessary.

It would be one less hardware thing to worry about. You could buy an external one. Yeah, and an external blue-ray one, might I add. I think that this move would be nice...a year or two from now...idk I kinda like the idea

If this was true, what would happen to Boot Camp?

Windows 7 does support usb boot (and EFI).

Personally, I still stand by the ODD, but then I still use physical media because it still has advantages over DD and I rent stuff.
