I'm sure if this does in fact happen (Why would they patent it if it wouldn't?) then Apple will most likely find a way to conserve energy and not let it overpower the battery life. Who knows, this could be a very good thing. It would be somewhat like a quick pick menu screen.
    Below are the patents

Dunno. Dont have an iphone. But if you get a text when phone is in "standby" doesnt the phone alert you? Same with mail? Dont understand why you would need this. Would you still have to slide to unlock? otherwise mistaken clicks are unavoidable in pockets.

Looks pretty cool. If this included music controls it would basically be PocketTouch

I doubt Apple would even dare to release a new iPhone yet. It hasn't even been half a year. I'd suggest a big firmware update with it. No matter what, if Apple did apply the update they would most likely make it look clean and beautiful. I'm just curious of what would happen to the lockscreen.

yeah there would be no need for it if you can open the app from the screen and then just close it and now youre on your springboard

Unless they kept it and made an option in "Settings" where you can choose whether you want the unlock screen or the new display.
