I'm confused on how to "back up your ECID SHSH signatures". Could someone please go over this in detail- Both on backing it up and how to restore using the backed up signatures if it becomes needed. Thanks very much.

    Backing Up Your Sigs

On the first page of Cydia or Rock there should be a section that directs you to back up your ECID SHSH signatures. If you have already then it should state that you have done so. I don't have a 3GS or iPt 3G so can't provide any screenshots

    Downgrading/Restoring to 3.1.2

If you find you need to restore or downgrade back to 3.1.2 then you just open up the 'hosts' file under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ on Windows or /etc/ on Mac (via Go->Go To Folder).

Open up the hosts file in NotePad (Win) or TextEdit (Mac) and add the line:

    Code:
    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
..at the end. Save it. Then put your iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 3G into DFU mode and shift+restore to your 3.1.2 firmware. If you get any errors ignore them and repeat the shift+click restore process. The line you added in the hosts file will spoof the activation to Cydia's server for activation. I'm presuming Rock uses the same address to save your ECID SHSH signatures.

Note that you may need to use an earlier version of iTunes. If you're having problems then download and install iTunes 9 from filehippo.com.

For more details on ECID signing see Saurik's article here

Hey mod is it just the devices listed? Can i downgrade my ipt2g (non mc) from 3.1.3 > 3.1.2 via DFU ? I'm on 3.1.3 jailbroken and don't need to downgrade but just wondering if it's still possible.

    Cheers

Yes you can. It's just devices with the new bootrom and Apple codesigning (i.e. newer iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G and iPod touch 2G MC model) that have to go through this mess... iPod touch 2G MB is pwned-for-life.
