    from http://www.thestandard.com/news/2008/04/22/apple-aims-patent-im-features-iphone

Apparently Apple has filed a patent for an IM application for portable devices. Could we expect an official iM (see what I did there?) application soon?

Wow. So we 'll see another MobileChat application, now developed by Apple... Sounds good, eh?

At the SDK conference, Apple showed their new AIM application so I'm guessing that is it.

This would be cool. But us jailbreakers already have mobile chat...

Slightly incorrect. Apple let developers from several software companies come in and spend acweek prior to the SDK release playing with it and trying to develop some software. They liked how far AOL got, and let them present their progress with the SDK to demonstrate how easy and powerful it is. Apple didin't make it, and I don't think they would limit a chat program to one protocol.
