How is scanning your fingerprint on your phone more efficient than swiping a credit card?

It can be used as authentication, for passwords and receipts (instead of a signature).
You'd still use a credit card to pay for things, obviously,

Cool. But I hope they do it well enough, that someone can't hack your device and steal the fingerprint scan.

This could be used to counter the android phone with facial recognition for unlock(i forget the name). Also i would hope that it is well secured like Tim said, i wouldnt want people stealing my fingerprint and then getting access to my credit cards and other stuff. But i trust apple would get it right,

And how exactly would the print get scanned?
A scanner imbedded in the glass?
    Creative use of the camera?

Assuming ANY of the leaked photos of the glass are legit, then it's safe to assume the next iPhone will not include this feature (because there's no mysterious additions on the glass pieces we've seen thus far)...

would be cool if they did get it but also completely unnecessary and would probably cost quite a bit.

If they can make it secure then i really hope this is true.

Apple only bought this technology in July. It would be already too late to integrate something like this into the next iPhone, but there's a chance Apple products that are released in 2013 could feature this technology in some capacity.

And yes, a sensor embedded underneath the glass seems to be the best way to implement this. I'd also imagine this technology will only be used in iPhones, and possibly iPod touches. It would be way too cumbersome to work for the iPad.
