    I recently bought a iPhone 3GS 8GB, and it's running on FIrmware 4.0.1.

Is there a possible way of restoring the iphone WITHOUT upgrading the firmware?

And no is not jailbroken on 4.0.1.

You need to save the SHSH blobs for the device. If you jailbreak it real quick using jailbreakme.com then click "make my life easier" in cydia. Then you just wait for it to say something at the top like "SHSH on file for: 4.0.1" then you have to go through the whole editing your host files and then shift restore. Hope i helped. If no one posts any guides for you, i'll be happy to

I heard about that, some people used tinyumbrella for the SHSH blobs to downgrade.

How about on the iOS settings, it says ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS.

Will this bring the device back to factory settings?

There is no way I can use the restore button upgrading to 4.1 than downgrading it back to 4.0.1.

Because I'm not going to use AT&T, I'm going with T-Mobile, and I'm not updating my baseband...

So is there anyway to restore it to factory 4.0.1 WITHOUT updating the firmware?

    1. Download a copy of 4.0.1 (Google)
    2. Jailbreak with JailbreakMe (http://www.jailbreakme.com on your phone)
    3. Open Cydia and select "Make My Life Easier"
    4. Run TinyUmbrella and save your .shsh (select your device, firmware, and the source is Cydia)
    5. Start TSS Server (make sure no other programs are listening on port 80)
    6. Put your phone in DFU mode
    7. Left shift (left alt if you're on a Mac) + Restore in iTunes
    8. Point iTunes to 4.0.1
    9. Once iTunes gives you an error and your phone goes into recovery mode, use TinyUmbrella to kick it out

    Or could I do this?

INstead of using tinyumbrella, I add this to the host file

Also when restoring, do I have to put the device in DFU mode? or no?

You still need your blobs saved (on Saurik's servers) if you're going to edit the hosts file, and you need to put your device in DFU mode before you restore.

So, if I use tinyumbrella there is no DFU mode

If I edit host files I have to put it in DFU.

One last question, if I use tiny umbrella and use itunes to restore, do I have to use tiny umbrella to kick it our of recovery mode or no?

Sorry, I forgot about that. You need DFU mode in both cases. I followed the steps above when downgrading my phone and it went into recovery mode at the end and I used TinyUmbrella to kick it out.

Try using TinyUmbrella to save them and see what happens.
