Seems like the "bars" update is in the 4.1 beta.

Left: iPhone 4 with 4.0 firmware. Right: iPhone 4 with 4.1 firmware

Notice how the bars on 4.1 are slightly taller and you are given less bars even though the signal would be perfect in that area!

Edit: This shows (in a basic way) how the way the bars are calculated has changed.
So now since each bar range is bigger (bars 4 and 5 might even have a smaller range than shown in this image, to allow the other bars to have a bigger range) when the signal degrades it will only drop one or no bars.

Actually they don't want to fool you. They want to make it more visible for everyone.

It's probably just a tweak they wanted to do.

But... you really have a good conversation by phone and reception with the full bars or are you having bad reception even with the bars at 3? does puttingg your hand in the grip turns your bars to 0 ?

This is why I'll never buy an iPhone 4.

And who has supplied you with this information. I'm thinking it was probably the brainwashers from Apple. Watch out guys.

There shouldn't be a need to change the size of the bar....
Honestly the original is much more precise if you will...
