A few days ago, in order to restore my ipod touch 1st gen to 2.2.1 to do a fresh jailbreak (after 3.0 was released but before the jailbreak was),
I clicked on restore without pressing anything else like alt or shift,
It automatically gave me the terms and conditions of 3.0 firmware and started downloading without costing me!

After it finished downloding, thinking it was a bug and the firmware was still 2.2.1 when i restored it, it was really 3.0

I use itunes 8.2, windows and have a free itunes account.

I have heard that you need to register the firmware but that was never the case for me.

The firmware update for ipod touch does cost $9.99 right?

the dfu exploit works like this... if you enter dfu mode, we do not load iBoot or the OS... but iTunes can know which device is attached (iPod or iPhone) and when you click restore, it contacts the Apple server and gets the latest firmware... cuz well, iTunes has no idea what firmware you have currently since iBoot is not loaded... if you're lucky, a restore from dfu mode "could" get you the 3.0 firmware... free of charge...

Technically, no... i doubt it could be... you are downloading it through iTunes... and apple somehow never managed to fix up the dfu loophole... all you are doing is restoring your ipod (possibly where the software has failed)... you aren't particularly asking for the firmware 3.0.... but it gives you that firmware and no options to select any other fimrware version

hahahhahaahh this is EPIC, you guys should make a new thread about this... everyone can get a free 3.0 pretty much.

To original poster - Did you "at ANY time" in the past have version 3.0 on (whether it be the GM or a beta etc) ???
