Gizmodo has made several calls(3 to be exact) to Apple Care asking about why calls are dropping, the quality being bad, and not being able to connect to 3G. Apple Care's response was to hold it differently or buy a case.

Yeah? Well my friend owns an iPhone 4 and he holds it by the antenna and the call quality is completely fine and I haven't experienced any dropped calls, even in a call that was 57 minutes long.

That pisses me of because I was planning on getting one thinking it was a software issue that could be fixed.

There is a thread that people who have the iphone in other countries have the problems based off of what phone service they had

You will probably only get the problems if you live in an area with crappy AT&T service. If you are in a good place, it will be fine.

that's true, the update will not fix the problem, if you're in a low signal zone - then no software update will be able to fix it, apple care is right to say that the update will only fix the signal strength algorithm, that shouldn't come as a surprise to any one.....

I've tried many times to drop a call with my iPhone 4 by holding the corner and at max I lose 1-2 bars. The corner does indeed make you lose some signal strength but not enough to take you from a strong 5 bars to none.

I live in a poor signal area in a rural part of UK. With Vodafone UK. I have no signal issues.

Tried to get death grip in other low signal areas but all ok. I wonder if there were different batches? Got mine on 24 th June so not sure.
