    No, if the number of bars are less than 3 there are 2 possible values. 1 and 2.

    if( numberOfBars < 3 ) numberOfBars = numberOfBars + 3

    If there was 1 bar
    if( 1 < 3 ) numberOfBars = 1 + 3; //Would be 4

    If there was 2 bars
    if( 2 < 3 ) numberOfBars = 2 + 3; //Would be 5

    or maybe i'm missing something.

    I'd just like to add that this issue does exist on other mobile phones. I'm currently using a windows mobile device which, when held in my hand, loses 1-2 bars.

    I'm in an area with high strength and when it's on a surface, I get full signal. I pick it up and hold it in my hand, it immediately drops to 3 bars.

    I have noticed my iPhone 4's reception is way better than my 3GS and i live about 60 meters from an o2 Mast.

    Well I have noticed quite the opposite. I'm standing right next to an AT&T cell tower with my iPhone 4 and I get full bars (without holding it). As soon as I touch its "sensitive spot", it loses every bar and I can't even load a damn page. This is obviously more than a silly display problem. The 3GS never had this issue. I'm skeptic but I'm hoping the software fix will actually achieve something.

    I'm really wondering if some devices are defect since some people report no issue at all and if signal strength has no impact on the ability of the "death-grip" to screw up the reception maybe only the early phones manufactured have this issue?

    what would be really interesting would be to compare the weeks in which the iPhone's with the issue and those which don't are compared. Anyway in my country they have yet to be released so I'm hoping by then they will have corrected.

    However, I'm pretty sure Apple would NEVER distinguish the phones produced with the issue and those who have it in order to avoid having to replace phones.

    of course...they even do this with the battery life. example, for the battery to go from 100% to 99% it takes a while seeming as if the iphone has a good battery...look at it when its at 25%, the time it takes to go down is very short. apple is a sly, dishonest company

    Anyone notice that quite a few people DIDN'T have a reception problem? An example is my next door neighbor, SoldierKnowsBest, and I personally tried one out.

    I hate how apple claims that this is caused by low signal areas, and that the bars aren't 'real'. People should be complaining to AT&T or the other phone companies for bad signals everywhere. I get three bars inside my house on Verizon, while my friend came over and got none. :mad:

    Well, if it is a Windows mobile this problem is most definitely a software issue. ;)

    What if it's a Nokia phone...? N900, anyone?

    Anyway, regarding this issue, I can confirm that it happens even in the San Jose area. There are some "dead spots" in the city that assassinates the signal bars as soon as you take the phone out of your pocket. Considering how close Apple's headquarter is, I'm amazed they didn't tour the city for a test.

    In any case, a rubber band (bumper) will fix it. I went to the Apple's store in Oakridge to get one yesterday, and quite a number of people were there to get one as well. Only black was available though. (Psh... saw a lady walking out of the store with a brand new iPhone 4 box in hand in case you are hunting for one, there was also this huge old man buying two iPads! And they said they were out of stock!)

    I'll put up a user review of the bumper after a few days of use. Suffice to say, Apple didn't just use a rubber band to make it (thankfully because the thing is $29.00 plus tax!). It has some extra polish that actually made the whole phone even sexier than it should be, and I thought the black phone with a black bumper would look weird... But really, I like the look a lot now! And the feel when you hold the phone is also improved. Drastically!

    Currently anxiously anticipating the white iPhone 4 now. I think that with some more colorful bumpers, the iPhone 4 in white will absolutely soar in appeal!
