    its funny how it says the signal displays wrong on the first iphone as well but the update isnt going to be available for it. it shows that they completely discontinued support for the original iphone.

    This video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYmVpoccPnc ) seems to prove Apple's statement wrong.

    The guy in the video had good signal (he did a speed test and got good results), then after holding it the speed test didn't even start.

    if( numberOfBars < 3 ) numberOfBars = numberOfBars + 3

    Maybe the phone thinks it has low signal and doesn't load..

    So the number of bars is either negative infinity or [3,5] ?

    This is Apple's bullsh*t excuse they always try to make when stuff like this happens.

    I don't know the technical details, but as far as I know, the other option was to alter the voltages which would kill the battery. Apple opted to change the signal display to give the illusion of a substantially smaller drop. Of course, this will look fine for Apple, but if I were AT&T, I'd be ticked.

    Again though, I'm not an expert. Suffice it to say that I will not be buying an iPhone 4. It's too bad, because this is the first iPhone since the original that I was actually interested in.

    Haha.
    "Don't worry, you didn't lose signal! You just never had it to begin with! Yay!"

    Is this something I seriously need to consider before buying an iPhone 4? My current Blackberry Curve seems to get great signal almost everywhere - better than my Dad's iPhone 3GS.

    Wait a while until they fix it (for real) on new ones being manufactured. After that you should be fine.
