I am in the process of designing an application for the app store, and understand that it is important to have a very nice-looking, catchy icon to go along with your app. I know how to create icons and know the requirements, (57x57 & .png) but am struggling to find a good program to design app icons. I have tried Fireworks MX, but don't seem to be getting any success. I am just wondering what programs people use that work well for them.

I appreciate your help & suggestions.

Photoshop, it's the choice of practically every graphics designer. If you're looking for something that free google Gimp, the OS X version just doesn’t feel "machish".

since its going in the app store they are going to want a 512 by 512 version of our icon and scaling it up from 57 by 57 is going to look bad so it would be wise just to start out at 512 by 512
