I searched but didn't find anything.

Is there anyway to take pictures or video when the screen if off or in another app? I know there was a app that was pulled from the app store that used one of the volume buttons to snap a pic but was removed. I will keep looking around but if anyone has heard of anything like this, please let me know.

    Thanks.

Well, you can press the power and home button at the same time and it will take a picture of your screen when you're in an app. But if you mean using the camera when you aren't in the camera app then I have no idea.

Thanks for the quick reply... more like setting up a tripod and just start recording for a good amount of time. No real need for the screen to be on if your just capturing whatever comes your way.

Oh well I guess you can just put the tripod on, start recording, press the power button real quick, the screen will be off but it will still be recording. Try that

It doesn't exactly work that way^

It stops recording after a second.

If your jailbroken, I'd look into the screen dimming modification.

Wouldn't Insomnia work perfectly for this?

    Edit: Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

Insomnia claims to do the following:
"...when enabled, will prevent the iPhone from sleeping, thus overriding its default behaviour. This allows background applications to continue to run and WiFi to work long after the screen has been switched off. (The iPhone's default behaviour is to sleep 30 seconds after the screen has gone off, when not docked and charging that is). "

Insomnia keeps the wifi on d:
This would be a nice tweak, but it could kill your battery if you accidently trigger the activation..

You can try to use ScreenDimmer from Cydia. That will turn off the backlight but keep the app running so you should be able to keep recording video. Haven't tried it myself, though.
