I'm thinking about getting an iPhone and then getting one of those free texting apps so I can save $20 a month.

Does anyone do this? I'd love to be able to save that $20 a month.

It can be done. TextNow is the best.

How much data would about 1000 sent texts and 1000 received text be? Thats usually what I average for texting a month.

I'm wondering what data plan I could get away with.

    Doesn't send MMS. Only SMS.

You should just go with the least amount of data and check your data everyday at the end of the day. If you are about to go past just upgrade it. No problem.

They aren't perfect. I used to use those programs with an iPod touch. The delays and fooling around like "oh, call me at ### and text me at ###!" just made it not worth it. Imagine you're in the heat of an animated discussion with your girlfriend... Do you want to have any issues with the PHONE complicating things? It feels kinda cheap telling people a random texting number, too. And when you meet new people, you give them one number, and they text you there. That's just how it works. One number.

I really, really like saving money. I am a free app maniac.

Texting, the "biggest rip off in America", is something that I pay for, and I have a 5GB data plan

[Now, to be fair, it's a family plan, but I'd probably still pay.]

I'm not telling you to throw your money away, but... Maybe you should get the 200MB plan without texting and see how you like that money saving option, as the above poster mentioned

How much do they charge for texting there?
Here they charge just $5.00 for unlimited texts. :/
