well, I know it can be done but I'm just curious as to why you need to change the MAC address, unless you've stolen it and doesn't want someone to track you down. but I could be wrong.

Same reason why you need to change MAC in routers

Some WiFI networks are MAC locked :>

Changing MAC softwarely don't changes MAC hardwarely so if you steel it, this won't work

one good reason is you don't have a wifi router, but your neighbor does. You can sniff out is wifi, copy or clone one of his MAC addresses in use and if he has a filter on his router for allowed MAC addresses only you can use his wifi to get online. Of course this is totally illegal so don't do it.

Ah! that's a very reasonable explaination. While a MAC address is normally a hardware based binary. I've heard of a software spoof that can manipulate the MAC address. Umm... I don't know how that would really work out since the hardware portion of the Touch 2G pretty tight, but I'm sure there are some hackers working or already have something of that nature. I can't post any links due to forum rules but you can most likely google up [PIRACY] and go from there. Those in the knows, knows who they are.. good luck

basically changing mac address or better said software spoofing mac adddress is not illegal, so I'll show it in a short guide:

install and open up Terminal.app on your ipod touch.
then type "login root" hit enter
type password "alpine" (nothing will appear on the screen! that's usual!)
then type "ifconfig en0 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" and hit enter
xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is the mac address to set.

everything has to be typed without quotes of course.

    that's it

I tried apps that are supposed to do that, and I tried it manually, no problems there, but my router doesn't find the spoofed address I provided, but the real one.

Maybe it's different on the 2G because it uses a different chip?
