With an iPod Touch, you need WiFi, iPhones however use: 3G, EDGE and GPRS

You could tether a cell phone (for example, a verizon phone) to a laptop and use your cell phone as a modem. Then, setup your laptop to share your cell phone's internet connection via wifi to your iPod - but if your going to do all of that, you might as well just use the laptop for your internet.

Being able to access the net via a method such as 3g on my iPod Touch is something I would lvoe to be able to do. It's probably the only thing I think the Touch is missing.

Technically, No. Cellphones make calls in the form of Data. Like Skype or any other VOIP service. Hell, cell calls ARE VOIP. So if you were to have a Data plan on a 3G network, you are, in essence, including a Cellphone. With the iPod Touch 2G, it would be a Phone.

it's been discussed before. you dont need phone facilities to have mobile internet. the two can be kept completely separately apart and treated as 2 separate technologies/billing entities. they're not the same. there are mobile devices on the market the cater for both or individual technologies. perhaps the Touch might one day pick up on this.

that's true. one prominent example is the amazon kindle. however, it is unlikely apple will wish to further blur the differentiation between the touch and the iphone.
