gIMD2Test is a cool port of a 3d-model viewer. It's on the installer.
I made a quick drop-in replacement model of an iPod touch
I used the apple product shot for the texture

    Download the files

    here's some instruction:
    1. use your sftp or scp to browse to /Applications/gIMD2Test.app
    2. backup the original tris.md2 and skin.tga, I just rename them, ie: tris.md2.bak (adding .bak at the end)
    3. unzip my archive
    4. copy the two files to the gIMD2Test.app folder on your iPod
    5. launch/re-launch the gIMD2Test application

    have fun.
You can make these yourself using a number of 3d modellers that support the md2 format. Just have at least one frame and name it tris.md2. you also need an accompanying skin.tga, a 256x256 24-bit texture.

many of the quake2 models can be adapted. you may also notice the viewer has implemented anaglyphs (red/blue 3d glasses) for extra depth perception

    now that is cool!

they need to add an option to switch between different models.

EDIT: can you make it so it isnt som estrange double-sided ipod?

    Yes
You could texture the back if you mess with the md2 program
I may update the file later

Not bad -- works well. I think you really need to bump up the zoom scale though; you can zoom in and out by pinching but it takes a hell of a lot of pinching to get it to move any useful distance.

Other than that cool -- yeah, a model library would definitely be a useful addition.

Does this use the OpenGL library?

thanks, that's pretty cool! I wish it were a little bigger (the 3d ipod) though.

It would be cool if somebody could port quake 2 across to the ipod, the model viewer is great. Hope somebody considers this idea

seeing as just one model runs at 10-15 fps, i dont think it would really be wise to try and port quake 2, unless some serious optimization happened for this.

I think this app could be really cool if you could swap between different models. Also support for some kind of lighting would be nice, or even just vertex colours. Oh and normal maps/specular maps/reflection maps etc

ok, now I'm just getting greedy.

One thing I was interested in was that you mentioned the viewer has implemented 3d anaglyphs. How do I get it to display in this mode? It just looks like a normal render mode to me and there don't seem to be any menu options to change it. Am I missing something?

Oh - just thought of a really cool feature - what if you could tilt the ipod and the model on screen would rotate an appropriate amount in the same direction, creating the impression that it is a real 3d object inside? Combining this with a really good 3d anaglyph mode and some dorky 3D glasses would give an almost hologram like solidity to the model. Does that make any sense or am I just getting carried away?

it only renders in anaglyph mode.
