Are you worried about losing data? If it wants to restore from a backup, all it's going to do is copy over contacts/photos/etc etc from an earlier state. Not wipe the iPod.

There is sharepod, or you can let iTunes do what it wants, I don't believe restoring from a backup will cause any harm.

You can use YamiPod or mediamonkey as alternative of iTune

Itunes.app and AppStore.app are pretty independent on your device. Try them.

Now sometimes I don't feel like turning on the laptop and dragging it over (small laptop desk on wheels) So I also use my dekstop to manage my ipod but I use copytrans on my desktop.

So Itunes on laptop (windows 7)
    Copytrans on desktop (windows xp)
my mp3 collection is on 2 external usb hdd's

    http://www.copytrans.net/

so far it's been pretty good

    works pretty good
