I just changed my passcode to an alphanumeric one, but it seems I have no way of entering letters when trying to unlock. Should the unlock screen show a keypad with both numbers and letters? Is there something wrong with my ipod?

Or am I just totally incapable of using this thing and don't know how to enter the letters?

Yes, the iPod is supposed to bring up the keyboard for you. Doesn't it ? If it doesn't, may you post a screenshot ?

You should see something similar to this when you are on the lock screen:

My screen only shows the numbers. And there's no ABC button.

Did you untick simple code in settings>general>passcode lock, because that is not the alphanumeric seting.

I did untick the simple code setting. I purposely went into my ipod to change it to an alpha numeric passcode (because I wasn't aware of this function before!). I've also tried the 4-digit passcode that I was using before, but it tells me I'm wrong.

Try the first 4 digits of your an passcode, so 2 correponds to abc 3 corresponds to def and so on.

I've tried that also. Doesn't work. I've tried so many different things it's already forced me to connect to iTunes. And then I exhausted those attempts and now it's disabled (again) for x minutes.

Mine did the same exact thing. Did you ever figure out how to get letters?
