Well the 3G versions are anyways.

In another thread on 'initialization' I asked whether a new Ipod Touch could be initialized without iTunes. No one so far came up with a way to do it.

This means that new iPod Touches are tethered machines.
You must tether your iPod to a computer to initialize it and if you ever need to restore your machine back to its original state you will need to tether it again.

Contrast this to Pocket PC's that have the operating system built into them. If the PPC needs to be re-initialized, you simply re-initialize it on its own. No need to tether it to a computer.

umm, thats why Settings > General > Reset is there for a reason.

you can format the iPod from there without the use of a computer.

OK that's good to know. But it won't help if your machine locks up will it?

How about getting a new machine working without iTunes? Is it possible?

if you're ever locked out, then you would have to resort to a DFU + Restore with iTunes.

i prefer doing it with iTunes because it's a lot faster.
