I found this out when I tried out Airplane mode overnight on my iPod Touch.

WiFi on Overnight (Sleep Mode ON)

Wastes battery life all together. I just leave it on overnight and I can't turn on the device, only if I plug it into iTunes.

    Airplane Mode on Overnight.

A significant difference. I turn Airplane mode overnight before I goto bed, and I'm left with the same battery life I have when I wake up in the morning.

So, since Apple has carried out the iOS4 update, the loss of Battery life seems to be the Wifi turned on over night. So this means Apple hasn't intergrated the feature they had back in 3.1.3 when Sleep mode turned off the WiFi

Hope this solves some of your problems

Actually this is the new "feature". I think they should change it where every X amount of hours the it is in sleep mode Wi-Fi turns on for 5 minutes, Pushes/Gets updates and then turns back off.

I've done this for as long as I can remember.
I thought everyone already knows about this?

What Apple changed is the WiFi timer.

If you turn it on, it stays on.

Of course Airplane mode will save battery life.
It puts the iPod in sleep mode and does nothing besides that. Just sleeps.
Little to no energy is used with Airplane + Sleep mode.
