The idea is that I want one of those WLAN-equipped HDs in my car and access the data (movies, music) with my iPod. So basically this would turn it into a 758 GB iPod touch...

But i can't seem to find a client for the touch.

Just to clarify this once again: I'm not looking for the AFPd or any other server, it's the client I need.

Any ideas? Or am I just missing something?

So wait... Are you asking for a Media Server like device for your Car that your iPod can access?

Nope, I'm looking for a SBM/NFS/AFP client software.
I did install MobileFinder but I couldn't access any shares with it.

So it'd be basically a server. That serves up Media to your device (iPod/iPhone), am I correct? Like streaming? But using those specific Protocols?

You know those HDs you can just hook up to your network and set up shares, users and stuff via some web interface. It's the same, only with a wireless network interface. And that's what I'm gonna put in my car.

But I need to be able to access SMB or NFS or AFP shares to get to my data.
Forget about streaming and all those fancy-shmancy words that marketing gurus put in your head.
I just want a plain file access via one of the following transfer protocols:
    - SMB
    - NFS
    - AFP

Forget about media and stuff, too. It's just about accessing files, no matter what kind of files. Just plain file access...

I don't think the iPod's OS has anything close to that builtin that can access those capabilities. Even with Mobile Finder.

And the "Storage" would have to be able to support those 3 protocols. AFP is for Apple, SMB is Microsoft... So you're probably stuck with either NFS or AFP.

AFP is for Apple, SMB for Windows?!
You got something sooo wrong here, buddy...
Maybe you don't know it but Mac OSX has support (i.e. clients) for all of the mentioned file transfer protocols built in. So, since the touch OS is basically a version of OSX i assume it wouldn't be that big a problem to port any one of those clients to the touch/iphone.

I'm just a little bewildered that noone has done it yet. I mean, don't you guys have servers at home?

I'd love to be able to access my data via the touch at home, too, wouldn't you?
