I know a lot of developers make money from their free apps by putting ads in them. How is this set up? How do you get paid for putting the ads in? Also, how is the amount determined? Is it by the amount of downloads of the app?

I'd appreciate any information on this!

I found a good tutorial for admob apps.

My real question now is how revenue is decided, and how much you really make. The tutorial mentioned how many people click the ad will determine revenue. Do people actually click the ads? How much will you get per click?

Also, how do you actually get the money? Does the ad company mail you a check monthly or something?

    I honestly have no idea.

But, I'd imagine you get not even a dollar for every click. Probably 15-25 cents.

$0.25 would actually be a lot, considering everybody downloads free apps, and how many times people accidentally move their finger over the ad, or just look out of curiosity.

Maybe they get paid via PayPal?.... I don't know.

$100 a week to just insert an ad is awesome.

I take it that app popularity plays a massive roll in all of this. Is your app really popular, making the $300 in three weeks the "high end" of the spectrum, or is that really average?

Also, is it generally frowned upon to put an ad bar in a paid app?

I don't think the guy who just paid a dollar or two on your app is going to be - shall we say - overjoyed to see ads.

Putting advertisements in an application someone is paying to use is not only rude, it shows that you have no taste.

Advertisements are ugly and give you less room to do things on the screen.

You can also make a paid version with no ads

He specifically said "revenue on free apps"....

Anyway this is what I know about the ad process: The two biggest market places are mobclix and admob. They have a minimum payout usually through paypal (~$50) and usually pay monthly. They take a share of the profit (not more than 20%-30%). -Mobclix does not take a cut of your advertising revenue. You get paid for clicks and perhaps views?

I think google even has their own mobile adsense for phones such as the iphone. Also remember that it really depends on the structure of your app. Since the screen is small already, you don't want to limit the user to the space they have to work with your app.

For information on how to add the ads to your code, check the ad marketplace your going to use as they have tutorials.

I suggest you visit the sites as I am not sure on the complete accuracy of this post.
