What if Apple releases a new firmware and I want to download it (only thing that would make me download is if they allow flash or java or both at the same time)
to my Ipod TOuch, will I have to restore first from iTunes to avoid bricking or just download it straight up? I'm new to this whole hacking thing so yeah..

From my understanding, the only people who got "bricked" in the iPhone update were those who did hardware modifications in order to unlock their sim service. The rest could simply restore and update.

I very much doubt that Apple would brick the iPod with an update but if you absolutely must update (can't think of why) then you should always do a clean restore beforehand anyway.
