I was hoping somebody from the UK or indeed anywhere else may be able to shed some light on a few things for me.

    So here's the story.

Tomorrow will see the arrival of my very first iPhone (3G 16GB), it will in fact be the first time I've ever even held one so as you can imagine, I have no idea what to expect.

Now, I'm currently on a pay monthly O2 contract. I have a feeling the data plan I have for "GPRS" isn't going cut it, so I'll have to contact O2 and get myself on to whatever it is iPhone and O2 have going for browsing for a set price, without limits. That's not a problem.

The problem is: on the eBay listing it confirms that the device has been upgraded to 3.0, and so far I am of the understanding that this can't be unlocked, yet. Is it likely that I won't have any carrier activity at all, despite it being an O2 contracted device? Will it even recognise my SIM, or do they protect against any sim but the one registered to the phone?

If not, I hear "ultrasn0w" is the key, anyone confirm this?

Like I said, I've never even used one, just done some light research and found no definitive answers, I apologise in advance if there's something on these forums answering my questions.

    So to sum up:
iPhone 3G coming tomorrow locked to O2 with 3.0 firmware
I'm O2 pay monthly for another phone which I no longer own
I don't yet have the correct internet plan with O2, but that's fine.

Questions again if you didn't bother reading the story above:
Will the device recognise my sim?
    Will I have carrier activity?
Ultrasn0w: Wait for it's release and everything will be fine?

Ah, one more question before I submit: Possible to downgrade from 3.0 temporarily to jailbreak and unlock, if Ultrasn0w is a while off? (I'm not asking how long away the release date is, I had an iPod touch a few months ago and know just how annoying those questions are!)

I had this EXACT problem last night.

    Follow these steps.

    1) Restore your iPhone to a fresh 3.0.
    2) You will now be stuck on the Emergancy screen.
    3) Install redsn0w 0.7.2 on the dev team's website.
    4) Run the software.
    5) Let it do the rest.
    6) iPhoneb will now be on 3.0 Jailbroken and activated.

***In the next 50 hours the dev etam will proboly release ultrasn0w which is a program you willd ownload in cydia/icy and it will unlock ur phone to work on T-Mobile or any GSM carrier***

plz get back to me if this do or doesn' work.

no problem. i would have to say though as seeing redsn0w has many bugs as coming out as a new 3.0 jailbreak, maybe the same thing will happen with the unlock. dont do it as soon as its released. read around and see if anyone is having major problems.

Well, I was hoping I wouldn't have to unlock since I'm on O2 myself, but for exclusivity it wouldn't surprise me if it's one sim per phone. I'm gonna read up on activation to see if any light can be shed there.
